Rivers Crisis: 120 Youth Leaders Granted Bail


They are accused of damaging the gate of the house of Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Martins Amayefure.


The Chairman of the Rivers State Branch of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Mr. Chijoke Ifunwo, has been arraigned at a magistrate court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.



Ifunwo, who was indicted along with 120 others, appeared in full at Rivers Magistrate Court 22 on Wednesday where he was arraigned on five counts.


The charge was conspiracy. cause a riot. Damage to the gate of the residence of Mr. Martins Amaufure, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Unlawful assembly. and cause destruction of public order.



When the charges were read out, all the young defendants pleaded ``not guilty.''



After reading the complaint, the defendant's lawyer, Mr Arabo Tamnowari, applied for bail, arguing that there were four competent sureties available for all 121 defendants if requested.


This was countered by the prosecuting lawyer, Mr Enyepere Sikupi, who questioned the accuracy of the bail address.



After hearing both sides, Judge Gift Amadi Esq. granted bail of 100,000 each to all defendants and adjourned the hearing until December 5, 2023. However, the number of guarantors has been increased to 20 people with verifiable addresses.
